History

Deer Lake Borough was incorporated in 1876. The area was originally part of the larger township of West Brunswick, which was established in 1845. The area was first settled in the late 1700s by German immigrants. The town was originally known as “Deer Lake” due to the abundance of deer in the area. The name was changed to “Deer Lake Borough” in 1876 when it was incorporated.
The town was primarily an agricultural community until the early 1900s when the coal industry began to boom in the area.
