Cross Roads Borough is a small borough located in York County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the county, just north of the Susquehanna River. The borough is bordered by the townships of East Hopewell, Lower Chanceford, and Windsor. The population of Cross Roads Borough was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
Cross Roads Borough was founded in 1845 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of York. The settlers chose the name “Cross Roads” because of the intersection of two major roads in the area, the York-Lancaster Turnpike and the Susquehanna Turnpike. The borough was officially incorporated in 1851.
In the late 19th century, Cross Roads Borough was a thriving agricultural community. The borough was home to several farms, a grist mill, a saw mill, and a blacksmith shop. The borough also had a post office, a general store, and a hotel.
In the early 20th century, Cross Roads Borough began to experience a decline in population as many of its residents moved away to larger cities in search of better job opportunities. The borough’s population continued to decline until the 1950s, when the population began to slowly increase again.
Geography
Cross Roads Borough is located at 39°45'45" North, 76°30'45" West (39.7625, -76.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
The borough is located in the Piedmont region of Pennsylvania, which is characterized by rolling hills and valleys. The borough is situated in the southeastern corner of York County, just north of the Susquehanna River.
Economy
Cross Roads Borough is a primarily residential community. The borough does not have any major industries or businesses. The majority of the borough’s residents are employed in the nearby cities of York and Lancaster.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 305 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,817.5 people per square mile (700.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 781.7 per square mile (301.7/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,845. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
