Coplay borough Summary
Coplay Borough is a small borough located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the Lehigh Valley region of the state, approximately 8 miles north of Allentown. The borough is bordered by Whitehall Township to the north, North Whitehall Township to the east, and South Whitehall Township to the south. As of the 2010 census, the population of Coplay Borough was 3,560.
History
The area that is now Coplay Borough was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s. The area was originally known as “Klopp’s Mill” after the first settler, John Jacob Klopp. In 1814, the area was officially incorporated as Coplay Borough. The name Coplay is derived from the Lenape word “Koppelau”, which means “place of the pines”.
The borough was originally an agricultural community, with many of the residents working in the local iron ore and coal mines. In the late 1800s, the borough began to industrialize, with the opening of several factories, including the Coplay Cement Company. The cement company was the largest employer in the borough for many years, and was the largest cement plant in the world at one point.
Geography
Coplay Borough is located at 40°39'45" North, 75°30'45" West (40.6625, -75.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land. The borough is located in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania, and is bordered by Whitehall Township to the north, North Whitehall Township to the east, and South Whitehall Township to the south.
Economy
The economy of Coplay Borough is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The largest employer in the borough is the Coplay Cement Company, which produces cement and other building materials. Other major employers in the borough include the Coplay Borough School District, the Coplay Borough Police Department, and several retail stores.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 3,560 people, 1,521 households, and 945 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,967.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the borough was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
