Collinsburg Summary

Collinsburg is a borough located in Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Collinsburg was founded in 1817 by William Collins, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was originally known as Collinsburgh, but the name was changed to Collinsburg in 1836. The town was incorporated in 1845.
The town was an important stop on the Pittsburgh and Steubenville Railroad, which was built in 1851. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Collinsburg is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. The town also has a few manufacturing companies, including a steel mill and a plastics factory.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,619.2 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 1,118.2 per square mile (431.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.9% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 0.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
