Clay Summary

Clay, Pennsylvania is a small borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southwestern corner of the county, approximately 15 miles south of Pittsburgh. The borough is bordered by the boroughs of Elizabeth and West Elizabeth, and the townships of Elizabeth and Forward. As of the 2010 census, the population of Clay was 1,845.

History

Clay was originally part of Elizabeth Township, which was established in 1788. The area was first settled in the late 1700s by German immigrants, who were attracted to the area by its rich soil and abundant natural resources. The first post office in the area was established in 1817, and the first school was built in 1820.
In 1845, the area was incorporated as the borough of Clay. The name was chosen in honor of Henry Clay, a prominent statesman and politician from Kentucky. The borough was originally a farming community, but it began to develop into a small industrial center in the late 19th century. The first industry in the area was a brickyard, which opened in 1876. Other industries soon followed, including a glass factory, a coal mine, and a steel mill.

Geography

Clay is located at 40°14'N 79°53'W (40.23, -79.88). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Clay is a small, rural community with a limited economy. The borough is home to a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The largest employer in the area is the Elizabeth Township School District, which employs approximately 200 people.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,621.4 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 1,148.6 per square mile (444.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
