Clarence Summary

Clarence is a small borough located in the state of Pennsylvania, in the United States of America. It is situated in the northwestern corner of the state, in the county of Erie. The borough is located on the banks of the Conneaut Creek, and is bordered by the townships of Amity, Concord, and Greene. The population of Clarence was 1,845 as of the 2010 census.

History

Clarence was first settled in 1820 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was originally known as “Clarenceville”, and was named after the Duke of Clarence, who was the brother of King George IV of England. The town was officially incorporated in 1845.
In the late 19th century, Clarence was a thriving industrial center, with several factories and mills located in the area. The town was also home to a number of coal mines, which provided employment for many of the town’s residents.
In the early 20th century, the town’s economy began to decline, as the coal industry began to decline. The town’s population also began to decline, as many of the town’s residents moved away in search of better economic opportunities.

Geography

Clarence is located at 41°45'N 79°45'W (41.75, -79.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
The borough is located in the northwestern corner of the state, in the county of Erie. The borough is bordered by the townships of Amity, Concord, and Greene.

Economy
