Charleroi borough Summary
Charleroi Borough is a borough located in Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The population was 4,743 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Charleroi Borough was first settled in 1790 by a group of French Huguenots. The town was named after the city of Charleroi in Belgium. The first post office was established in 1845. The borough was incorporated in 1891.
Geography
Charleroi Borough is located at 40°12'25" North, 79°54'45" West (40.206944, -79.9125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Charleroi Borough is largely based on manufacturing and services. The borough is home to several manufacturing companies, including a steel mill, a glass factory, and a paper mill. There are also several retail stores and restaurants in the area.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,743 people, 2,039 households, and 1,232 families residing in the borough. The population density was 6,845.3 people per square mile (2,639.2/km2). There were 2,220 housing units at an average density of 3,179.2 per square mile (1,219.7/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.45% White, 0.85% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.85% of the population.
There were 2,039 households, out of which 27.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 33.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $35,938. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $21,917 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $15,917. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
