Carroll Valley borough Summary

Carroll Valley Borough is a borough located in Adams County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gettysburg Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Carroll Valley Borough was incorporated in 1962 from parts of Freedom Township. The borough was named for the Carroll family, who were early settlers in the area. The borough was originally part of the Gettysburg Battlefield, and the area was used as a staging area for Union troops during the Battle of Gettysburg.

Geography

Carroll Valley Borough is located at 39°45'45" North, 77°14'45" West (39.7625, -77.2458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Carroll Valley Borough is largely based on tourism. The borough is home to Liberty Mountain Resort, a ski resort and golf course, as well as several other tourist attractions. The borough is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,717 people, 645 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,420.3 people per square mile (548.7/km2). There were 672 housing units at an average density of 554.3 per square mile (214.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.90% White, 0.35% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.35% of the population.
There were 645 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.10.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $50,000, and the median income for a family was $54,375. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,945.
