Carlisle Borough is a borough located in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is the county seat of Cumberland County and is located in the Susquehanna Valley, approximately 25 miles west of Harrisburg, the state capital. History

The area that is now Carlisle Borough was first settled in 1751 by a group of Scots-Irish immigrants led by James Patterson. The town was originally known as "Carlisle Courthouse" and was the county seat of Cumberland County. The town was laid out in 1751 and incorporated as a borough in 1782.
In the late 18th century, Carlisle was an important stop on the road between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. It was also a major center for the production of iron and steel. During the American Revolution, Carlisle was the site of a major battle between the Continental Army and the British Army.
In the 19th century, Carlisle was an important center for education. Dickinson College was founded in 1783 and the Carlisle Indian Industrial School was established in 1879.
