Canonsburg borough Summary
Canonsburg Borough is a borough located in Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The population was 8,992 at the 2010 census.
History
Canonsburg was founded in 1788 by John Canon, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was named after him and was incorporated as a borough in 1802. The town was originally a farming community, but it soon developed into a center for industry. The first industry in the town was a gristmill, which was built in 1790. This was followed by a sawmill, a distillery, and a tannery.
In the 19th century, Canonsburg became a center for coal mining. The town was home to several coal mines, including the Canonsburg Mine, which was the largest coal mine in the area. The town also had several glass factories, which produced bottles and jars for the local industry.
Geography
Canonsburg is located at 40°15'25" North, 80°7'45" West (40.256944, -80.129028). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Canonsburg is home to several large employers, including the Canonsburg General Hospital, the Canonsburg School District, and the Canonsburg Police Department. The town is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,945 people, 3,845 households, and 2,521 families residing in the borough. The population density was 6,845.3 people per square mile (2,639.2/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 3,093.3 per square mile (1,192.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 0.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.7 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $47,917. Males had a median income of $35,917 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $19,917. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
