Pike County Summary

Pike County is a county located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. As of the 2010 census, the population was 57,369. Its county seat is Milford. The county was created on March 26, 1814, from part of Wayne County, Pennsylvania. It was named for General Zebulon Pike, an explorer who was sent to scout out the land that would become Pike County.

Geography

Pike County is located in the northeastern corner of Pennsylvania, and is bordered by Wayne County to the west, Monroe County to the south, and Sullivan County to the east. The Delaware River forms the northern border of the county. The terrain is mostly hilly, with some flat areas in the valleys. The highest point is the summit of Promised Land Mountain, at 1,845 feet (562 m). The county has a total area of 567 square miles (1,470 km2), of which 563 square miles (1,460 km2) is land and 4.2 square miles (11 km2) (0.7%) is water.

Economy

The economy of Pike County is largely based on tourism, with many visitors drawn to the area for its natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The county is home to several state parks, including Promised Land State Park, Delaware State Forest, and Lackawaxen State Park. The county also has several ski resorts, including Big Bear Ski Resort and Shawnee Mountain Ski Area.
Agriculture is also an important part of the economy, with dairy farming being the most common type of farming. Other crops grown in the county include corn, hay, and soybeans.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 57,369 people, 22,845 households, and 15,945 families residing in the county. The population density was 101.3 people per square mile (39.1/km2). There were 25,945 housing units at an average density of 45.9 per square mile (17.7/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 94.2% White, 2.3% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
The largest ancestry groups in Pike County are German (25.2%), Irish (17.2%), English (14.7%), Italian (7.2%), and Polish (6.2%).
In terms of religious affiliation, the county is predominantly Protestant, with the largest denominations being the United Methodist Church (17.2%), the Presbyterian Church (USA) (14.7%), and the Lutheran Church (10.2%). There is also a significant Roman Catholic population (14.7%).

Education

Pike County is served by the Delaware Valley School District, which consists of seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. The county also has several private schools, including the Delaware Valley Christian Academy and the Pike County Christian School.
The county is home to two colleges, East Stroudsburg University and Northampton Community College. East Stroudsburg University is a public university that offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Northampton Community College is a two-year community college that offers associate degrees and certificate programs.
