Forest County Summary
History
Forest County is located in the northwestern corner of Pennsylvania and is bordered by Warren, Venango, Clarion, and Jefferson counties. The county was created in 1848 from parts of Venango and Warren counties and was named for the dense forests that covered the area. The county seat is Tionesta.
The first inhabitants of the area were Native Americans, including the Iroquois, Delaware, and Shawnee tribes. The first European settlers arrived in the late 1700s and early 1800s, and the area was quickly developed for farming and logging. The county was officially established in 1848, and the first courthouse was built in Tionesta in 1851.
