Benton borough Summary

Benton Borough is a small borough located in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the Susquehanna Valley, approximately 10 miles northwest of Bloomsburg. The borough was incorporated in 1876 and has a population of 1,845 as of the 2010 census.

Geography

Benton Borough is located at 40°59'N 76°25'W. It is situated in the Susquehanna Valley, approximately 10 miles northwest of Bloomsburg. The borough is bordered by Benton Township to the north, East Chillisquaque Township to the east, and North Centre Township to the south. The borough is located in the Central Susquehanna Valley, which is a large valley that is part of the Appalachian Mountains. The Susquehanna River runs through the valley and is the main source of water for the borough.
The borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all of which is land. The terrain is mostly flat with some rolling hills. The climate is humid continental, with cold winters and hot, humid summers.

History

Benton Borough was founded in 1876 and was named after Thomas Hart Benton, a United States Senator from Missouri. The borough was originally part of Benton Township, but was incorporated as a separate borough in 1876.
The borough was originally a farming community, but in the late 19th century, the borough began to develop into a small industrial center. The first industry in the borough was a sawmill, which was built in 1876. Other industries soon followed, including a brickyard, a tannery, and a furniture factory.
The borough continued to grow and develop throughout the 20th century. In the 1950s, the borough was home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a drug store. The borough also had a movie theater and a bowling alley.
