Ben Avon Heights Borough is a small borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. It is situated on the north bank of the Ohio River, just east of the city of Pittsburgh. The borough is bordered by the boroughs of Emsworth and Kilbuck, and the townships of Ben Avon and Ross. The population of Ben Avon Heights Borough was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Ben Avon Heights Borough was incorporated in 1927, and was named after the nearby town of Ben Avon. The area was originally part of Kilbuck Township, and was settled in the late 1700s by Scots-Irish immigrants. The area was known as “The Heights” due to its location on a hill overlooking the Ohio River. The first post office in the area was established in 1876, and the first school was built in 1877.
In the early 1900s, the area began to develop as a residential suburb of Pittsburgh. The first homes were built in the 1920s, and the borough was officially incorporated in 1927. The borough was named after the nearby town of Ben Avon, which was named after the Scottish town of Ben Aver.

Geography

Ben Avon Heights Borough is located at 40°30'17" North, 80°2'45" West (40.504722, -80.045278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
The borough is located on a hill overlooking the Ohio River. The borough is bordered by the boroughs of Emsworth and Kilbuck, and the townships of Ben Avon and Ross.

There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
