Beaver Borough is a borough located in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located along the Ohio River, approximately 30 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. The population was 4,543 at the 2010 census.

History

Beaver Borough was founded in 1802 and was originally part of Beaver Township. It was incorporated as a borough in 1868. The borough was named after the Beaver River, which flows through the area.
The borough was an important transportation hub in the 19th century. The Pennsylvania Canal, which connected Pittsburgh to the Ohio River, ran through the borough. The canal was replaced by the Pennsylvania Railroad in the late 19th century.

Geography

Beaver Borough is located at 40°45'7"N 80°17'45"W (40.7519, -80.2958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Beaver Borough is home to several businesses, including a number of restaurants, retail stores, and professional services. The borough is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a steel mill and a paper mill.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,543 people, 1,945 households, and 1,093 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,817.5 people per square mile (1,478.2/km2). There were 2,093 housing units at an average density of 1,743.3 per square mile (673.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 94.2% White, 2.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.2% were non-families. 37.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $38,929. Males had a median income of $31,964 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,845. About 10.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
