Baldwin Borough is a borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. It is a suburb of Pittsburgh and is part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 19,767 at the 2010 census.

History

Baldwin Borough was founded in 1844 by William Baldwin, a prominent Pittsburgh businessman. The borough was originally part of Baldwin Township, which was divided into two parts in 1868. The northern part became Whitehall Borough and the southern part became Baldwin Borough. The borough was named after William Baldwin, who was a prominent Pittsburgh businessman and the founder of the borough.

Geography

Baldwin Borough is located at 40°22'17" North, 79°59'45" West (40.371445, -79.995890). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Baldwin Borough is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The borough is also home to several industrial parks, which provide employment opportunities for local residents.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 19,767 people, 8,093 households, and 5,541 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,717.3 people per square mile (1,821.7/km2). There were 8,717 housing units at an average density of 2,093.2 per square mile (806.3/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.9% of the population.
There were 8,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $55,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $22,945.
