History
Avonia was first settled in 1820 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was originally known as "Avon" and was later changed to "Avonia" in 1845. The name is derived from the Latin word for "bird".
Avonia was incorporated as a borough in 1851. The town was originally a farming community, but in the late 19th century, it became a popular summer resort destination. The town was known for its mineral springs, which were believed to have healing properties.
Geography
Avonia is located at 41°51'N 79°59'W (41.851, -79.983). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,621.4 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $32,500 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $18,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
