Atlas Summary

Atlas is a borough located in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southern part of the state, approximately two miles south of the city of Pottsville. The population of Atlas was 1,845 as of the 2010 census.

History

Atlas was founded in 1845 by a group of German immigrants who had settled in the area. The town was named after the Atlas Iron Works, which was established in 1845 by the immigrants. The iron works was the first industry in the area and provided employment for many of the town's residents.
Atlas was incorporated as a borough in 1872. The town grew rapidly in the late 19th century, and by 1900, it had a population of over 2,000. The town was home to several businesses, including a brewery, a tannery, a brickyard, and a coal mine.
Atlas was a major coal mining center in the early 20th century. The coal industry provided employment for many of the town's residents. The coal mines were closed in the 1950s, and the town's population began to decline.
