Arlington Heights Summary

Arlington Heights is a small borough located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southeastern part of the county, approximately 20 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The borough is bordered by Upper Dublin Township to the north, Ambler Borough to the east, Whitpain Township to the south, and Lower Gwynedd Township to the west. As of the 2010 census, the population of Arlington Heights was 1,819.

History

Arlington Heights was originally part of Upper Dublin Township, which was established in 1719. The area was known as “Arlington” until 1875, when it was incorporated as a borough. The name “Arlington” was chosen to honor General Robert E. Lee’s home in Virginia. The borough was originally a farming community, but it began to develop into a residential suburb in the early 20th century.

Geography

Arlington Heights is located at 40°09'N 75°13'W (40.15, -75.22). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Arlington Heights is primarily a residential community, but it does have a few businesses. The borough is home to a number of small retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The largest employer in the borough is the Montgomery County government, which employs a number of people in the area.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,819 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,039.2 people per square mile (1,174.2/km2). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 1,312.5 per square mile (506.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 87.2% White, 5.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $68,750, and the median income for a family was $81,250. Males had a median income of $51,250 versus $41,250 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $33,917. About 2.2% of families and 3.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
