Melrose Summary

Melrose, MA is a city located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. It is located approximately seven miles north of downtown Boston and is part of the Greater Boston metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 26,983.

History

The area that is now Melrose was first settled in 1628 and was originally part of Charlestown. In 1649, the area was incorporated as the town of Malden, which included what is now Melrose. In 1850, Melrose separated from Malden and was incorporated as a separate town.
In 1845, the Boston and Maine Railroad was built through Melrose, connecting it to Boston and other towns in the region. This helped to spur the growth of the town and by the late 19th century, Melrose had become a popular summer resort destination for wealthy Bostonians.
In the early 20th century, Melrose was a center of the shoe manufacturing industry. The industry declined in the 1950s and 1960s, leading to a decline in the town’s population and economy.

Geography

Melrose is located at 42°27′33″N 71°3′44″W (42.459167, -71.062222). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.1 square miles (13.2 km2), of which 5.0 square miles (13.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.45%) is water.
Melrose is bordered by the cities of Malden, Stoneham, Wakefield, Saugus, and Everett. It is also bordered by the towns of Winchester, Medford, and Melrose.

Economy

Melrose’s economy is largely based on the service industry, with many residents employed in retail, healthcare, and education. The city is also home to several corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the Boston Globe and the Boston Red Sox.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 26,983 people, 10,890 households, and 6,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 5,400.2 people per square mile (2,084.2/km2). There were 11,541 housing units at an average density of 2,303.3 per square mile (892.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 4.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.9% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 10,890 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.07.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $62,837, and the median income for a family was $77,890. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $41,845 for females. The per capita income for the city was $31,845. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.2% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.
