Dedham Summary

Dedham, Massachusetts is a town located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. It is located about 15 miles southwest of Boston and is part of the Greater Boston metropolitan area. The population of Dedham was 24,729 at the 2010 census.

History

Dedham was first settled in 1635 by a group of settlers from Roxbury, Massachusetts. The town was officially incorporated in 1636 and was named after the English town of Dedham, Essex. The town was originally part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and was a part of Suffolk County until 1793 when it became part of Norfolk County.
Dedham was an important center of the American Revolution. The town was the site of the first public school in the United States, the Dedham Public School, which was founded in 1644. The town was also the site of the first public library in the United States, the Dedham Public Library, which was founded in 1690.

Geography

Dedham is located at 42°13'N 71°11'W (42.2179, -71.1845). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.2 square miles (26.4 km2), of which 10.1 square miles (26.2 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (0.78%) is water.
The town is bordered by Westwood to the north, Norwood and West Roxbury to the east, Canton to the south, and Needham and Dover to the west.

Economy

Dedham is home to several large employers, including the Dedham Mall, the Dedham Country and Polo Club, and the Dedham Medical Center. The town is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 24,729 people, 9,845 households, and 6,717 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,444.3 people per square mile (943.7/km2). There were 10,093 housing units at an average density of 997.3 per square mile (385.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 87.2% White, 4.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 9,845 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $71,837, and the median income for a family was $86,945. Males had a median income of $60,890 versus $45,945 for females. The per capita income for the town was $35,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
