History
The area that is now Walpole was first settled in 1659 by a group of English settlers led by William Paine. The town was officially incorporated in 1724 and was named after Sir Robert Walpole, the first Prime Minister of Great Britain.
In the late 18th century, Walpole was a major center for the production of shoes and leather goods. The town was also home to several mills, including a paper mill, a grist mill, and a saw mill.
In the 19th century, Walpole became a popular summer resort for wealthy Bostonians. The town was also home to several large estates, including the estate of the prominent Boston merchant, John Amory Lowell.
Geography
Walpole is located at 42°9'45" North, 71°14'45" West (42.1625, -71.2458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 16.2 square miles, of which 15.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water.
The town is bordered by the towns of Norwood, Westwood, Sharon, Foxborough, and Medfield. The Charles River forms the eastern boundary of the town.

The economy of Walpole is largely based on retail and services. The town is home to several large retail stores, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Home Depot, and a Target. There are also several smaller retail stores and restaurants located in the town.
The town is also home to several industrial and manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a plastics manufacturer, and a printing company.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 24,070 people, 8,845 households, and 6,541 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,509.3 people per square mile. There were 9,093 housing units at an average density of 571.2 per square mile.
The racial makeup of the town was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.9% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.19.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
