According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (2.44%) is water.

History

Acushnet Center was first settled in 1659 and was originally part of the town of Dartmouth. It was incorporated as a separate town in 1787 and was named after the Acushnet River, which runs through the area. The town was a major center of the whaling industry in the 19th century.

Economy

The economy of Acushnet Center is largely based on agriculture and fishing. The town is home to several farms, including the Acushnet Creamery, which produces dairy products. The town is also home to several seafood processing plants, including the Acushnet Fish Company, which processes and packages seafood for local restaurants and markets.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,845 people, 1,845 households, and 1,323 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,179.2 people per square mile (455.7/km2). There were 1,902 housing units at an average density of 463.2/sq mi (178.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.45% White, 0.45% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.90% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
