Middletown, Connecticut is a city located in Middlesex County, Connecticut, United States. It is situated on the Connecticut River, about halfway between Hartford and New Haven. The city has a population of approximately 47,000 people, making it the second largest city in the state.
History
Middletown was first settled in 1650 by English settlers from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The town was originally called Mattabeseck, which means “great river” in the Algonquin language. The town was renamed Middletown in 1653, and was incorporated in 1655.
Middletown was an important port during the colonial period, and was a major center of trade and commerce. During the Revolutionary War, Middletown was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Middletown in 1777.
In the 19th century, Middletown became an important industrial center, with several factories and mills located in the city. The city was also home to several prominent educational institutions, including Wesleyan University, which was founded in 1831.
Geography
Middletown is located in central Connecticut, about halfway between Hartford and New Haven. The city is situated on the Connecticut River, and is bordered by the towns of Cromwell, Portland, East Hampton, and Middlefield.
The city has a total area of 16.3 square miles, of which 15.9 square miles is land and 0.4 square miles is water. The terrain of Middletown is mostly flat, with some hills in the northern part of the city.
Economy
Middletown’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and services. The city is home to several large companies, including Pratt & Whitney, a manufacturer of aircraft engines; and Middlesex Hospital, a major medical center.
Middletown is also home to several educational institutions, including Wesleyan University, Middlesex Community College, and the University of Connecticut’s Middletown campus.
