Deep River Center Summary
Deep River Center is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the town of Deep River, Connecticut, in Middlesex County. It is situated on the east bank of the Connecticut River, about halfway between Middletown and Old Saybrook. The population of Deep River Center was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Deep River Center is located at 41°27'25" North, 72°25'45" West (41.456944, -72.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
History
The area that is now Deep River Center was originally inhabited by the Wangunk Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the 1650s. The town of Deep River was incorporated in 1812.
The area that is now Deep River Center was originally known as "Ferry Landing" due to the presence of a ferry that crossed the Connecticut River. In the late 19th century, the area became known as "Deep River Center" due to its location at the center of the town of Deep River.
Economy
The economy of Deep River Center is largely based on tourism and retail. The town is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, antique shops, and art galleries. The town is also home to the Deep River Historical Society, which operates a museum and offers educational programs.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 830.9 people per square mile (321.3/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 365.9 per square mile (141.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 96.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $54,917, and the median income for a family was $63,750. Males had a median income of $45,000 versus $35,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $25,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
