Eagle River Summary
Eagle River is a small unincorporated community located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is situated in the western part of Chippewa County, approximately 20 miles east of Sault Ste. Marie. The community is located on the banks of the Eagle River, which is a tributary of the St. Marys River. The population of Eagle River was estimated to be around 500 people in 2020.
History
The area around Eagle River has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1800s. The community was originally known as "Eagle River Station" and was established in 1883 when the Detroit and Mackinac Railway built a station in the area. The station was used to transport lumber and other goods to and from the area.
In the early 1900s, the community began to grow and develop. The first post office was established in 1906 and the first school was built in 1908. The community was officially incorporated as a village in 1910.
