Copper Harbor Summary
Copper Harbor is a small unincorporated community located in Keweenaw County, Michigan. It is situated on the northern tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, which is the northernmost point of the state of Michigan. The community is located on the shore of Lake Superior and is surrounded by the Keweenaw National Historical Park. The population of Copper Harbor was estimated to be around 200 people in 2020.
History
The area around Copper Harbor was first inhabited by the Ojibwe people, who used the area for fishing and hunting. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s, and the town was officially founded in 1843. The town was named after the copper deposits that were discovered in the area. Copper mining was the main industry in the area for many years, and the town was home to several copper mines.
The town was also home to a lighthouse, which was built in 1849. The lighthouse was used to guide ships through the treacherous waters of Lake Superior. The lighthouse is still standing today and is a popular tourist attraction.
