Iron County Summary

Iron County is a county located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is bordered by the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota to the west, and Lake Superior to the north. The county seat is Crystal Falls. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,817.

History

Iron County was organized in 1885 from parts of Marquette and Menominee counties. It was named for the iron ore found in the area. The first settlers in the area were miners and lumberjacks who came to the area in the late 1800s. The area was heavily logged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the logging industry was the main source of employment for many years.
The county was also home to several Native American tribes, including the Ojibwe, Ottawa, and Potawatomi. The area was part of the 1836 Treaty of Washington, which ceded much of the Upper Peninsula to the United States.

Geography

Iron County is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is bordered by the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota to the west, and Lake Superior to the north. The county has a total area of 1,845 square miles, of which 1,817 square miles is land and 28 square miles is water.
The county is mostly forested, with some agricultural land in the south. The Iron River flows through the county, and there are several lakes, including Lake Gogebic, Lake Antoine, and Lake Michigamme.
