Zilwaukee Summary

Zilwaukee is a city located in Saginaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,945 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Saginaw River, just south of the city of Saginaw.

History

The area that is now Zilwaukee was first settled in the early 1800s by French-Canadian fur traders. The first permanent settlers arrived in the 1840s, and the area was known as "Zilwaukee" by 1854. The name is derived from the French word for "swamp," and the area was known for its marshy terrain.
In 1871, the village of Zilwaukee was incorporated. The village was home to a number of industries, including a sawmill, a grist mill, and a brickyard. The village also had a post office, a school, and a number of churches.
In the early 1900s, the village began to grow rapidly. The population increased from just over 500 in 1900 to over 1,000 by 1910. The village was reincorporated as a city in 1915.
In the 1950s, the city began to experience a period of rapid growth. The population increased from 1,500 in 1950 to over 5,000 by 1960. As of the census of 2010, there were 2,945 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,334.1 people per square mile (515.7/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 533.2 per square mile (206.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,958, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $31,964 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,845.
