Wyoming Summary

Wyoming, Michigan is a city located in Kent County, Michigan, United States. It is a suburb of Grand Rapids and is part of the Grand Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 72,125, making it the third largest city in Kent County.

History

The area that is now Wyoming was first settled in 1832 by a group of Dutch immigrants. The area was originally known as "Wyoming Township" and was named after the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania. The township was organized in 1848 and was incorporated as a village in 1871. The village was incorporated as a city in 1959.

Geography

Wyoming is located at 42°54'N 85°37'W (42.9000, -85.6167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Wyoming is home to a variety of businesses and industries. The city is home to several large employers, including Spectrum Health, Metro Health, and Meijer. The city is also home to several smaller businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 72,125 people, 28,945 households, and 18,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,478.3 people per square mile (1,731.3/km2). There were 30,845 housing units at an average density of 1,917.3 per square mile (737.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 2.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.7% of the population.
There were 28,945 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,817. Males had a median income of $41,845 versus $30,845 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
