Walker Summary

Walker, Michigan is a city located in Kent County, Michigan, United States. It is a suburb of Grand Rapids and is part of the Grand Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 25,317.

History

Walker was first settled in 1837 by George Walker, a native of New York. He purchased land from the federal government and built a sawmill and a gristmill. The area was known as Walker's Mill until 1867 when it was renamed Walker Station. The village was incorporated as the City of Walker in 1960.

Geography

Walker is located at 42°57'25" North, 85°37'45" West (42.956944, -85.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Walker is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is home to several large employers, including Amway, Meijer, and Gentex Corporation. Walker is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 25,317 people, 10,717 households, and 6,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,286.2 people per square mile (886.2/km2). There were 11,717 housing units at an average density of 1,053.7 per square mile (406.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 4.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 2.2% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.2% of the population.
There were 10,717 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $31,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
