St. Clair is a city located in St. Clair County, Michigan, United States. It is situated along the St. Clair River, which forms the border between Michigan and Ontario, Canada. The city is located about 55 miles northeast of Detroit and is part of the Thumb region of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 5,485.

History

The area that is now St. Clair was first settled in the early 1800s by French-Canadian fur traders. The first permanent settlement was established in 1819 by William and Mary Burtch, who built a log cabin near the St. Clair River. The settlement was named Burtchville in their honor.
In 1837, the village was renamed St. Clair, after the river. The village was incorporated as a city in 1871.

Geography

St. Clair is located at 42°59′N 82°31′W (42.983, -82.517). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (2.44%) is water.

Economy

St. Clair’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and tourism. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including St. Clair Plastics, St. Clair Metal Products, and St. Clair Tool & Die.
The city is also a popular tourist destination, with several attractions, including the St. Clair Riverwalk, the St. Clair Historical Museum, and the St. Clair Art Fair.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 5,485 people, 2,093 households, and 1,372 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,334.2 people per square mile (515.7/km2). There were 2,309 housing units at an average density of 563.3 per square mile (217.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
