St Clair Shores Summary

St. Clair Shores is a city located in Macomb County, Michigan, United States. It is a suburb of Detroit and is located along the shores of Lake St. Clair. The city has a population of 59,715 as of the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now St. Clair Shores was first settled in the early 19th century by French-Canadian fur traders. The area was later settled by farmers and fishermen. The city was incorporated in 1951 and was named after the lake it borders.

Geography

St. Clair Shores is located at 42°29′N 82°51′W (42.48, -82.85). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.2 square miles (36.7 km2), of which 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2) is land and 3.0 square miles (7.7 km2) is water.

Economy

St. Clair Shores is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to several marinas, which provide access to Lake St. Clair.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 59,715 people, 24,845 households, and 16,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 5,323.3 people per square mile (2,053.3/km2). There were 26,845 housing units at an average density of 2,387.3 per square mile (921.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 3.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 24,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $62,945. Males had a median income of $47,813 versus $33,958 for females.
