Sherwood Summary

Sherwood, Michigan is a small village located in the northeast corner of Calhoun County, Michigan. It is situated on the banks of the Kalamazoo River, about 10 miles south of Battle Creek. The village has a population of about 1,000 people and covers an area of 0.7 square miles.

History

The area that is now Sherwood was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from New York and New England. The village was originally known as “Sherwood’s Corners” and was named after the Sherwood family who were among the first settlers. The village was officially incorporated in 1867.
In the late 1800s, Sherwood was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several mills, a cheese factory, a canning factory, and a brickyard. The village also had a post office, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.
In the early 1900s, the village began to decline as the local economy shifted away from agriculture. The mills and factories closed and the population began to decline. The village was nearly abandoned by the 1950s.
In the late 1970s, the village began to experience a resurgence. The population began to grow again and new businesses began to open. Today, Sherwood is a small but vibrant community.

Geography

Sherwood is located in the northeast corner of Calhoun County, Michigan. It is situated on the banks of the Kalamazoo River, about 10 miles south of Battle Creek. The village covers an area of 0.7 square miles and is surrounded by farmland.
