Roseville Summary

Roseville, Michigan is a city located in Macomb County, Michigan, United States. It is a suburb of Detroit and is part of the Metro Detroit area. The population was 47,299 at the 2010 census.

History

Roseville was first settled in 1818 by a man named John Rose. He was a veteran of the War of 1812 and was granted a land patent for the area. The area was originally known as Roseville Township and was incorporated as a village in 1925. The village was later incorporated as a city in 1950.

Geography

Roseville is located at 42°30′N 82°59′W (42.50, -82.98). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.2 square miles (26.4 km2), of which 10.1 square miles (26.2 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (0.78%) is water.

Economy

Roseville is home to many businesses and industries. The city is home to the headquarters of several major companies, including DTE Energy, Flagstar Bank, and the Macomb County Health Department. The city also has a large retail sector, with many stores and restaurants located in the city.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 47,299 people, 19,945 households, and 11,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,664.3 people per square mile (1,799.7/km2). There were 21,717 housing units at an average density of 2,145.2 per square mile (827.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 14.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 19,945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.3% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $51,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,945. About 8.7% of families and 11.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.7% of those age 65 or over.
