Richland Summary

Richland, Michigan is a small village located in Kalamazoo County in the southwestern part of the state. It is situated on the Kalamazoo River, about 10 miles east of Kalamazoo. The village has a population of about 1,500 people and covers an area of 1.2 square miles.

History

Richland was first settled in 1831 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as Richland Center, and was named after the nearby Richland Creek. The village was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Richland was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several mills, including a grist mill, a saw mill, and a woolen mill. The village also had a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a post office.
In the early 20th century, Richland began to experience a decline in population as many of its residents moved away to larger cities. The village was also affected by the Great Depression, and many of its businesses closed.
