Norton Shores Summary

Norton Shores is a city located in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 23,994 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, just south of Muskegon.

History

Norton Shores was first settled in 1837 by William Norton, who purchased land from the government and built a sawmill. The area was known as Norton’s Mills until 1871, when it was renamed Norton Shores. The city was incorporated in 1959.

Geography

Norton Shores is located at 43°10'25" North, 86°14'45" West (43.173611, -86.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 15.9 square miles (41.2 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km2) is water.

Economy

Norton Shores is home to several large employers, including the Muskegon County Airport, the Muskegon County Wastewater Treatment Plant, and the Muskegon County Health Department. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 23,994 people, 9,845 households, and 6,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,509.3 people per square mile (584.2/km2). There were 10,541 housing units at an average density of 662.3 per square mile (255.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 9,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
