Memphis Summary

Memphis, Michigan is a small village located in St. Clair County, Michigan. It is situated on the banks of the St. Clair River, approximately 25 miles northeast of Detroit. The village has a population of approximately 1,000 people and covers an area of 0.7 square miles.

History

The area that is now Memphis was first settled in 1837 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as “New York Settlement” and was later renamed “Memphis” after the ancient city in Egypt. The village was officially incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Memphis was a thriving port town. It was home to several lumber mills, a brickyard, and a shipbuilding company. The village also had a large number of saloons and taverns.
In the early 20th century, Memphis began to decline as the lumber industry moved away from the area. The village was also affected by the Great Depression and World War II.
