Melvin Summary
Melvin, Michigan is a small village located in the northeast corner of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It is situated in the center of Chippewa County, and is surrounded by the towns of Rudyard, Pickford, and Sault Ste. Marie. The village has a population of just over 500 people, and is a quiet, rural community.
History
The area that is now known as Melvin was first settled in the late 1800s by a group of Finnish immigrants. The village was originally known as “Finn Town”, and was home to a large number of Finnish-Americans. The village was officially incorporated in 1891, and was named after a local lumberman, John Melvin.
