Manton Summary

Manton is a small city located in the northern part of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. It is situated in the heart of the Manistee National Forest, and is surrounded by rolling hills, forests, and lakes. The city is home to a population of approximately 1,500 people, and is known for its rural charm and small-town atmosphere.

History

Manton was first settled in 1871 by a group of settlers from New York. The settlers were attracted to the area by the abundance of timber and the potential for farming. The town was originally named “Mantonville” after the first settler, John Manton. The town was officially incorporated in 1887.
In the early 1900s, Manton was a thriving lumber town. The town was home to several sawmills and lumber companies, and the surrounding forests provided an abundance of timber for the mills. The lumber industry was the primary source of employment for the town’s residents.
In the 1950s, the lumber industry began to decline, and the town’s economy shifted to focus on agriculture. The town is now home to several farms, and the surrounding area is known for its production of apples, cherries, and other fruits and vegetables.
