Kentwood Summary

Kentwood is a city located in Kent County, Michigan, United States. It is a suburb of Grand Rapids and is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. The population was 48,707 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Kentwood is located at 42°53′N 85°35′W (42.88, -85.58). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (0.62%) is water.

History

The area that is now Kentwood was first settled in 1832 by John Ball, a settler from New York. The area was originally known as Paris Township, and was incorporated as a village in 1933. The village was renamed Kentwood in 1936, and was incorporated as a city in 1967.

Economy

The economy of Kentwood is largely based on the service industry, with many businesses providing services to the surrounding area. The city is home to several large employers, including Amway, Meijer, and Steelcase. The city also has a large retail sector, with many stores and restaurants located in the Woodland Mall and the Kentwood Town Center.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 48,707 people, 19,945 households, and 12,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,019.3 people per square mile (1,168.2/km2). There were 21,541 housing units at an average density of 1,334.3 per square mile (515.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 11.3% African American, 0.5% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.7% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 19,945 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
