Ionia Summary
Ionia is a city located in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the county seat of Ionia County and is located in the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. The city is situated on the Grand River, approximately 40 miles east of Grand Rapids. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 11,394.
History
The area that is now Ionia was first settled in 1834 by settlers from New York. The settlement was originally known as "Ionia Mills" and was located on the banks of the Grand River. The settlement was named after Ionia County, which was named after the ancient Greek region of Ionia. The settlement was incorporated as a village in 1859 and as a city in 1873.
In the late 19th century, Ionia was a major center for the lumber industry. The city was also home to several manufacturing companies, including the Ionia Manufacturing Company, which produced agricultural equipment.
Geography
Ionia is located at 42°57′N 85°2′W (42.95, -85.03). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.90 square miles (15.27 km2), of which 5.87 square miles (15.19 km2) is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 km2) is water.

Ionia's economy is largely based on manufacturing and agriculture. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including Ionia Manufacturing Company, which produces agricultural equipment. The city is also home to several agricultural businesses, including dairy farms, fruit orchards, and vegetable farms.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 11,394 people, 4,541 households, and 2,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,936.2 people per square mile (746.2/km2). There were 4,945 housing units at an average density of 837.3 per square mile (323.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 1.3% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,845, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
