Hesperia Summary

Hesperia is a small village located in Oceana County, Michigan, United States. The village is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, approximately 20 miles south of Muskegon. The population of Hesperia was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Hesperia is located at 43°25'25" North, 86°14'17" West (43.423, -86.238). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

History

Hesperia was first settled in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after the Greek goddess of the dawn, Hespera. The first post office was established in 1856.

Economy

Hesperia's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station.

The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
