Grandville Summary

Grandville, Michigan is a city located in Kent County, Michigan, United States. It is a suburb of Grand Rapids and is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. The population was 15,378 at the 2010 census.

History

Grandville was first settled in 1833 by John Ball, a prominent early settler of Grand Rapids. The area was originally known as "Grand Rapids South" and was part of the township of Walker. In 1837, the area was renamed Grandville after the Grand River, which runs through the city.
In 1838, the first post office was established in Grandville. The first school was built in 1845 and the first church was built in 1848. The first newspaper, the Grandville Gazette, was established in 1851.

Grandville is located at 42°53'25" North, 85°41'17" West (42.890278, -85.688333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Grandville is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is home to several large employers, including Gordon Food Service, Grandville Public Schools, and Grand Valley State University.

As of the census of 2010, there were 15,378 people, 6,093 households, and 3,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,902.3 people per square mile (735.2/km2). There were 6,521 housing units at an average density of 803.3 per square mile (310.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 5.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 6,093 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females.
