Gibraltar Summary

Gibraltar is a small city located in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. It is situated on the Detroit River, just south of Detroit. The city has a population of 4,656 as of the 2010 census.

History

Gibraltar was first settled in 1816 by a group of French-Canadian immigrants. The settlement was originally known as “Rivière aux Canards”, which translates to “Duck River”. The settlement was later renamed “Gibraltar” after the British colony of Gibraltar. The name was chosen by the first postmaster, who was a British soldier.
In 1837, Gibraltar was incorporated as a village. The village was later incorporated as a city in 1891.

Geography

Gibraltar is located at 42°10′N 83°7′W (42.17, -83.12). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Economy

Gibraltar’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The city is home to several automotive parts suppliers, including Dura Automotive Systems, Inc., and the Gibraltar Trade Center. The city also has a number of retail stores, including a Walmart Supercenter.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 4,656 people, 1,845 households, and 1,213 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,097.2 people per square mile (808.7/km2). There were 1,945 housing units at an average density of 872.2 per square mile (337.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 6.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $51,944. Males had a median income of $41,944 versus $30,938 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,938. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
