Frankfort Summary

History
The area that is now Frankfort was first settled in 1855 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The settlement was originally called "Franklin" after Benjamin Franklin, but the name was changed to Frankfort in 1858. The city was incorporated in 1871.
Frankfort was an important port on Lake Michigan in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city was home to several lumber mills and other industries. The city was also a popular tourist destination, with several hotels and resorts located in the area.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
