Forest Hills Summary

History

The area now known as Forest Hills, Michigan was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of settlers from New York. The settlers were attracted to the area due to its abundance of natural resources, including timber and fertile soil. The first settlers built a small log cabin and began to clear the land for farming. The area was originally known as "Foster's Corners" after the first settler, John Foster.
In 1837, the area was officially incorporated as the Township of Forest Hills. The name was chosen to reflect the abundance of trees in the area. The first post office was established in 1838 and the first school was built in 1841.
The area continued to grow and prosper throughout the 19th century. In 1871, the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad was built through the area, connecting it to the larger cities of Grand Rapids and Detroit.
