Ecorse Summary
Ecorse, Michigan is a small city located in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. It is situated along the Detroit River, just south of the city of Detroit. The population of Ecorse was 9,512 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Ecorse was originally inhabited by the Potawatomi Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 19th century. The city was founded in 1837 and was originally known as “Eckersall” after the first settler, John Eckersall. The name was later changed to “Ecorse”, which is derived from the French word for “river”.
In the late 19th century, the city became an important industrial center, with several steel mills and other factories located in the area. The city was also home to a large number of immigrants from Europe, particularly from Poland and Italy.
In the early 20th century, the city experienced a period of rapid growth and development. The population increased from just over 1,000 in 1900 to over 10,000 by the mid-1920s.
Geography
Ecorse is located at 42°17′N 83°10′W (42.28, -83.17). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.2 square miles (8.3 km2), of which 3.1 square miles (8.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) (2.90%) is water.
Economy
Ecorse’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and industry. The city is home to several steel mills and other factories, including the Ford Motor Company’s Michigan Assembly Plant. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 9,512 people, 3,845 households, and 2,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,039.2 people per square mile (1,174.2/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 1,312.2 per square mile (506.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.2% African American, 37.2% White, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.2% were married couples living together, 28.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.2 males.
