Dowagiac Summary
Dowagiac is a city located in Cass County, Michigan, United States. It is the county seat of Cass County. The population was 5,873 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Cass County.
History
The area that is now Dowagiac was first settled in 1827 by the Potawatomi Indians. The name Dowagiac is derived from the Potawatomi word "dow-wa-ge-e-aug", which means "fishing water". The first white settlers arrived in the area in 1831. The first post office was established in 1837.
In 1851, the village of Dowagiac was incorporated. The first school was built in 1854. The first newspaper, the Dowagiac Times, was established in 1856.
In 1866, the village of Dowagiac was incorporated as a city. The first bank was established in 1867. The first railroad line was built in 1871.
In 1873, the first telephone line was established in Dowagiac. The first electric lights were installed in 1891.
In the early 1900s, Dowagiac was a major center for the production of furniture. The city was also home to several factories that produced stoves, wagons, and other products.

Dowagiac is located at 41°59'N 86°10'W (41.983, -86.167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 14.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 2,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,944, and the median income for a family was $41,944. Males had a median income of $31,944 versus $22,944 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,944.
