Chums Corner Summary

History

Chums Corner was first settled in the late 1800s by a group of Finnish immigrants. The community was originally known as “Finn Town” and was home to a large number of Finnish-Americans. The name was changed to Chums Corner in the early 1900s, after a local store owner named Charles “Chum” Johnson.

The community was primarily an agricultural and logging community until the 1950s, when the local economy shifted to tourism. The area is now home to several resorts, campgrounds, and recreational areas.

Geography

Chums Corner is located in the western part of Menominee County, approximately 10 miles south of the city of Menominee. The community is situated on the banks of the Menominee River, which is a major tributary of Lake Michigan. The area is mostly rural, with a few small towns and villages scattered throughout the region.

The climate in Chums Corner is typical of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, with cold winters and warm summers. The average annual temperature is around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, with an average high of around 70 degrees in the summer and an average low of around 20 degrees in the winter.
